3/5/2007 7:47:14 pm by CarlJ
Just found this interesting article over at TheObserver.
"The government is to be urged to consider a controversial plan to reclassify drugs according to the harm they do. The new ranking system would see alcohol placed high on the scale because of its links to violence and car accidents. Tobacco, estimated to cause 40 per cent of all hospital illnesses, would also come before the class-A drug ecstasy."

From this article over at Save Internet Radio, "If the RIAA and SoundExchange get their way, independent webcasting / Internet radio will soon cease to exist."

The Copyright Royalty Board has announced new royalty rates, which are based on "performances", where one performance is a single song streamed to a single user. For a station with an average of 1000 users, they will have to pay $154,176 for 2007, $193,536 for 2008 and $248,832 for 2009.

Hang the DJ

3/3/2007 12:13:54 pm by CarlJ
"It's time for a culture cull and the likes of Paul van Dyk, Gordon Ramsay and Donatella Versace are all in my firing line."

From the mouth of John Moore (formerly of Jesus and Mary Chain), "Being able to mix in another record with similar beats per minute does not require anything but the most rudimentary command of a twin-decked record player. The fact of the matter is that nobody would notice, or give a toss if it all went pear shaped - except other DJs. Without sounding too sinister, if they all disappeared tomorrow, nobody would remember they'd even existed."

2/24/2007 3:29:00 pm by CarlJ

No Dancing Allowed

2/24/2007 12:15:16 pm by CarlJ
I'm sure we have all heard of some really dumb laws, such as in California, you can get a $500 fine if you denotate a nuclear device within city limits, or in Florida, where it's illegal to give oral sex, or how about Hawaii where you can be fined if you don't own a boat, or how about this one, residents may not fish from a giraffe's back, which is in Idaho.

Well, according to various source, the city of New York has upheld an 80 year old cabaret law that bans dancing in bars. The law was enacted during the Prohibition era to "crack down on speakeasies".

According to the court, "Recreational dancing is not a form of expression protected by the federal or state constitutions", so therefore, it doesn't violate your constitutional right to free expression.

The $500 fine for denotaing a nuclear device, takes the cake, but you have to admit that not being able to dance is pretty dumb.
