Ont. judge rejects marijuana charge

1/3/2003 12:44:06 am by CarlJ
Just found this article over at Canada.com, which some of you may find interesting.
Supposedly, a judge in Ontario, threw out charges against a 16 year old, for possession of marijuana, which could soon spell the end of Canada's prohibition on possessing small amounts of pot. The boy's lawyer, Brian McAllister argued in court that there is effectively no law in Canada prohibiting the possession of 30 grams of marijuana or less, based on a ruling two years ago from the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Ecstasy rules rave scene in Vancouver

12/18/2002 10:22:43 am by CarlJ
This is a little article that I came across, a while back. It's a bit older, but I doubt much has really changed in the past few years, so I thought I'd post it (in it's entirety)

VANCOUVER -- Sarah's eyes bulge out like saucers and her smile is as constant as her chatter.
"I'm really, really high right now," she says giggling on the floor and hugging people she hardly knows.
Sarah, 16, has just popped an ecstasy pill at this Saturday night rave, which costs up to $75 per ticket. It's her first time on "e."
"Jungle" music pounds away in the dimly lit room where images of alien heads are projected onto screens.
"People are really cool," she says of the ravers at the all-night dance party where no alcohol is served and most of the 3,000 people have taken the illegal "love drug."

12/3/2002 10:36:38 pm by CarlJ
Originally printed here on Exclaim! by Michael Barclay, on Nov 1st, 2002.
"Toronto’s DJ Dopey, aka Jon Santiago, placed third in the solo category at this year’s DMC World Final turntable competition in September. First place went to Japan’s DJ Kentaro, while second went to the UK’s Skully. Santiago is the first Canadian to place in that category since Montreal’s DJ A-Trak in 1997."

12/3/2002 10:27:10 pm by CarlJ
According to this story from Ananova, Finland's Supreme Court has ruled that taxi drivers must pay royalty fees of £14 (about $20) annually if they play music in their car while a customer is in the backseat. This also includes if they play the radio, which already pays such fees.

HE'S (Not Just) THE DJ

11/20/2002 12:56:31 am by CarlJ
Remember DJ Jazzy Jeff? You know, Fresh Prince's side kick in the early 90's? Well, if you think he's died off, since they kind of "split" up, well, he hasn't. Jazzy Jeff has been busy since, with his own his own production company (A Touch of Jazz), as well, he just released a new album, "The Magnificent".
Remix Magazine has an article/interview with Jazzy Jeff. Personally, he's one of my favourite DJs, especially from their earlier albums, such as "He's the DJ, I'm the rapper". The guy has amazing skillz behind the tables.

Quite an interesting read, for anyone who has paid any attention to the RIAA in the news over the past few years.

Just read this story over on BBC News.
"Jude Law (A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Enemy at the Gates ...), and Sadie Frost's (Bram Stoker's Dracula) two-year-old daughter, Iris, has been rushed to hospital after swallowing part of an ecstasy tablet.
Frost - who recently gave birth to the couple's third child - was able to retrieve half of the tablet before Iris could swallow it all."

Jitter Jaw & NiGhTmArE for New Year's Eve?

10/3/2002 7:27:05 pm by CarlJ
I thought this should make the front pages of Vibez.ca. I've heard this rumour from one person so far, I've asked someone else, and they said it may be in the works, and now I read it on another message forum (Here). The one you know as djUnabomber, posted "You'll be awfully sad to hear we aint throwing one [New Year's Party] this year. We wanted to let soemone else do one. We may be doing a party in Sudbury instead with Jitter Jaw." If this does happen, it will be the sickest party that most people in Sudbury have ever been to. Jitter Jaw and NiGhTmArE Productions teaming up.
If this does happen, it will most likely be the biggest party ever in Sudbury.
Who would you love to see at this party? Leave your comments below ...

Well, here's a cheap little write up of a few events happening for the month of October.

What will they think of next?

Music Industry Unveils New Piracy-Proof Format

9/5/2002 6:10:14 pm by CarlJ
Phreaky-Zee has ICQed me with a link to this article from Urbanreflex.com.
A revolutionary new recording format has been created that will hopefully help win the war on illegal file sharing which is thought to be costing the industry millions of dollars in lost revenue. Spokesman Brett Campbell says that they are "confident that no-one is going to be able to produce pirate copies in this format without going to a heck of a lot of trouble."
Can this be the end of file sharing? Please read the article, and discuss below.

Do not try this at home!

8/27/2002 2:43:25 am by CarlJ
This scoop courtesy of the B.B.C: some scientists at the University of Cambridge decided to see what would happen to mice brains when exposed to dance music and drugs. The drug of choice used was amphetamines, and the music played was from the group Prodigy. Apparently 7 mice died listening to Prodigy but 4 also died while listening to Bach. The experiment was deemed cruel and ordered to be stopped.

First there was the popular Napster, then other programs like Audiogalaxy, and now this? Whats next?

What is NRG?

8/7/2002 12:35:18 am by CarlJ
I just recently ran across this article over at HardNRG. It tries to explain the differences between US Hard House, UK Hard House and Nu NRG.
"There are as many answers to this question as there are DJs.  However, there are some fundamentals that almost everyone will agree on.  Given the growing popularity of UK Hard House and Nu-NRG (hh-nu-nrg) the question often
comes up, exactly what distinguishes a "Nu-NRG Track" and how does that differ from a "UK Hard House" track?

This article is an attempt to answer this basic question, and help someone new to the style understand what makes up a basic NRG track as well as how DJs typically distinguish UK Hard House from Nu-NRG."
